Reading Journal 1

As an artist, theorist, critic, teacher, and writer, Douglas Davis has played an active role in contemporary art since the 1960s. A pioneer of video in the 1970s, his "live" satellite performance/video pieces are seminal exercises in the use of interactive technology as a medium for art and communications. Douglas Davis was an artist that specialized in the “out of the ordinary. “ He would take things that would be known as ordinary and make them something completely different and perceived as “strange” by most people. In 1977 Davis organized a satellite telecast between many artists in 25 different countries. Davis was the first to do anything of the kind, and he truly pushed the envelope in the digital media industry. Davis’ unique collaboration brought an entirely new type of art to the world. The interconnectivity between artists so far away created some exquisite pieces.

Now that artists from all over the world could be connected different aspects of culture could start showing up in their works. With the artists in this collaboration being so far away from each other, they could feed off of their vastly different ideas and techniques. The artists could take all different aspects of culture and interpretation and mix them together to make their own masterpieces. This new interconnectivity created a hodgepodge of creativity. Now having access to such a great amount of creative ideas, multi media art was at the top of its game.

Davis’ unique world is displayed all over the world and still influences artists today. His work pushed the envelope in the past, and his work continues to do that today even though the technology continues to evolve. Davis brought a brand new way of creating digital art and a new way of distributing digital art to the world. Many innovations today are based off of his previous endeavors.

Me Questionnaire

Hi my name is Ryan Kanner, I am a Electronic Multimedia Arts Technology major. I am from Westchester New York. I don't have much of an art background. I worked as a web designer for Chris Boey New York for the past two years. I have not taken any art history classes. I like playing the drums. I am in this class because it is a pre-requisite to a lot of the other classes i need to take. I very rarely go to art museums. I do travel quite a bit. I have been to every state in the United States except for Kansas and Alaska. I do live on campus, i live in Vaughn. I do not have a car on campus, it is back in New York. I don't really have a favorite artist, I am not that into art. If i could go anywhere in the world it would probably be Antarctica, because that would be pretty sweet to be able to say that i went to Antarctica. If i somehow received 1 million dollars i would invest it in gold and take the money out ten years later and have 10 times as much money after the U.S. dollar collapses.
